Sama ki khichdi or moraiyo/mordhan khichdi is usually made on Navratri fasting or Ekadashi fasting or other Hindu fasting. Sama is also known as Moraiyo/moraiya, mordhan, vari, varai, samak, samvat, vrat ke chawal and in English known as Barnyard millet. In Gujarat, we usually call this Moraiyo ni Khichdi. My mom makes it on every fasting.

To get started with this recipe, we have to first prepare a few ingredients. You can have sama ki khichdi (moriya) using 11 ingredients and 13 steps. Here is how you can achieve that.

The ingredients needed to make Sama ki khichdi (Moriya):
  1. Get 1 cup (240 ml) sama ke chawal(Moraiyo)
  2. Make ready 1 tbsp oil/ghee
  3. Take 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  4. Get 2 tbsp peanuts
  5. Prepare 1 potatoes peeled and chopped
  6. Make ready to taste Sendha namak (rock salt)
  7. Take 11/3 cups water
  8. Take 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  9. Prepare leaves Finely chopped coriander
  10. Make ready 2 green chill finely chopped
  11. Get 7-8 curry leaves

In English, it's known as Barnyard Millet. This savoury Khichdi made with Sama Ke Chawal and Potatoes. Mordhan khichdi or sama ke chawal recipe with root vegetables: Heat ghee in a kadai / heavy bottom pan and add a little jeera, one chopped green chili and curry leaves. Sama ki khichdi or vrat ki khichdi is usually made on Navrarti or Ekadashi fasting days.

Steps to make Sama ki khichdi (Moriya):
  1. Wash moraiya and soak for 10 minutes. Then discard the water.
  2. Heat the oil in a pan once hot add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
  3. Then fry peanuts for a minute or till it gets light brown in colour.
  4. Add chopped green chillies and fry for few seconds.
  5. Add cubed potatoes with sendha namak.
  6. Then add soaked moriya and mix and cook for a minute.
  7. Add water and bring it to a boil.If you like the consistency little loose increase the quantity of water.
  8. Once start boiling cover the pan and lower the heat to low.
  9. Let it cook for 17 minutes. After that open the lid.
  10. Fluff up the sama rice using spoon or fork.Squeeze fresh lemon juice.
  11. Add chopped coriander leaves and mix in.
  12. Serve with rajgira kadhi or singhare ki kadhi or it can be served with plain yogurt or farali raita.
  13. It is filling, nutritions and delicious.
