Erissery (Erishery) is another traditional Kerala Recipe made using ground coconut paste and finally seasoning with roasted coconut. I have always loved Erissery which my Mom used to prepare once in a while. Mathanga Payaru (Pumpkin and Bean) Erissery used to be the most common one prepared by my mom. Erissery is a special dish from Kerala that is also included in the feast of one of the biggest festivals of South India - Onam.

The ingredients needed to make Erissery:
  1. Get 1 cup beans Red mong (van payar)
  2. Make ready 3 cups Yellow pumpkin (mathanga)
  3. Get 1/4 teaspoon Chilli powder
  4. Take 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  5. Prepare 1 cup coconut Grated
  6. Get 1/2 teaspoon Cumin seed
  7. Get 1 teaspoon Mustard seed

  9. Get 2 nos red chilli Dry
  10. Get 2 tablespoons Coconut oil
  11. Take Water
  12. Prepare to taste Salt
  13. Make ready bunch Curry leaves

Erissery is a kerala special dish made for Onam, and made mostly with yellow pumpkin,called as Mathanga erissery. I remember my mom makes this but i have never made tried this on my own or tasted it after marriage. As my athai is very fond of this erissery, she makes this more when she comes to our house for summer vacation. Erissery is one of the traditional recipe of Kerala.

Instructions to make Erissery:
  1. Add washed moog beans, chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt, curry leaves and water to a presure cooker and cook (water level should be higher than beans) for approx. 15-20 minutes. Remove and open the cooker once the pressure is settled and add the pumpkin and cook again for approx. 5 minutes. Remove and allow to settle.
  2. Grind 3/4 cup coconut, cumin seed and onion with one table spoon of water to a paste.
  3. Open the cooker and add this paste and boil for few minutes (to make into a medium gravy). Add salt and chilli powder to the taste during this period.
  4. Heat coconut oil in a pan and add dry chilli, mustard seeds and curry leaves. Saute and pour this mixture to the curry.  Add 1/4 cup grated coconut to a small pan and fry till it becomes golden colour add to the erissery and this is ready to serve.

As my athai is very fond of this erissery, she makes this more when she comes to our house for summer vacation. Erissery is one of the traditional recipe of Kerala. Merger between sweetness of pumpkin and coconut takes your taste buds to another level. You can make erissery using Yam, Raw Banana, Raw Papaya, Jackfruit Prepare the erissery using coconut oil, if you want the authentic Kerala taste. The consistency of the dish should be reasonably thick In its very basic form, Erissery, the traditional dish from Kerala (South India), is made using a combination of vegetables and coconut.
