  2. Prepare 2 tsp yellow Moong Dal (optional)
  3. Prepare 3/4 cup Rice
  4. Prepare 4-5 cups water
  5. Get 2-3 tsp Bisi Bele bhath powder (MTR)
  6. Make ready 1 onion cubed
  7. Get 1 big tomato cubed
  8. Make ready 1 small Potato cubed
  9. Make ready 5 french Beans chopped
  10. Get 1 small carrot cubed
  11. Make ready 1/4 cup green Peas
  12. Take 1/2 tsp Ginger-garlic paste (4 Garlic cloves+1/2 inch Ginger)
  13. Make ready 1 tbsp Coconut oil/ghee
  14. Make ready 2 tsp tamarind paste
  15. Make ready 1 tsp powdered Jaggery
  16. Get 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  17. Take to taste Salt
  18. Prepare For Tempering
  19. Take 2 tbsp coconut oil/ghee
  20. Prepare 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  21. Make ready 1 pinch Hing(asafoetida)
  22. Take 8-10 whole cashewnuts
  23. Take 2 tsp Curry leaves
  24. Prepare For Garnishing
  25. Prepare 4 tsp Finely chopped coriander leaves

It is said to have originated in the Mysore Palace and from there spread across the state of Karnataka. Bisi bele bath or bhath is a rice-lentil-vegetables based dish, which translates to "hot lentil rice" in Kannada language. It is also known as Bisi bele huliyanna, which means "hot lentil sour rice". The traditional preparation of this dish is quite elaborate and involves the use of spicy masala, toor dal and vegetables.

Instructions to make Bisi Bele Bhath:
  1. Wash & cook together dal, rice with salt, turmeric powder, 2-3 drops of oil/ghee and 3 cups water to 4-5 whistles or till mushy.
  2. In a deep pan or wok, heat oil/ghee. Add onion, tomato & all vegetables. Saute for 2-3 mins & cook covered till half done.
  3. Then add Bisi Bele Bhath Powder, tamarind paste & jaggery. Mix well and add 1 cup water, bring to a boil. Simmer for 5 mins.
  4. Now add cooked dal-rice mixture to it. Mix very well to combine everything. Add more water to get the desired consistency. Simmer for 10 more mins.
  5. Now to prepare tempering, heat coconut oil/ghee in a tdka pan. Add heeng, mustard seeds, curry leaves. Allow to splutter then add whole cashews. Fry till cashews turn golden. Pour the tempering over bisi bele bath.
  6. Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve hot with Boondi or Cucumber raita!
