The ingredients needed to make Arachi vitta Meen kolambu:
  1. Prepare 3 nos Pomfret fish / (cleaned and made to pieces) - min
  2. Take 1 no Onion (medium size sliced) -
  3. Take Tamarind lime - small   size
  4. Get Water tamarind - required to make extract
  5. Take to taste Salt -
  6. Make ready 1 tsp Chilli powder -
  7. Prepare 2 tsps Coriander dhania powder / powder -
  8. Get 1 cup Coconut milk -
  9. Make ready To grind
  10. Make ready 1 no Onion (medium size)  -
  11. Take 2 nos Tomato -
  12. Make ready 12 nos Curry leaves -
  13. Get 8 nos Garlic -
  14. Get 1 1/2 tsps peppercorn whole -
  15. Make ready 2 tsps Jeera -
  16. Get To temper
  17. Take 4 tbsps Oil (sesame oil/ sunflower oil) -
  18. Prepare 1 tsp Mustard seed -
  19. Make ready 1/2 tsp Jeera -
  20. Take 1/4 tsp Fenugreek -

Wash radish, peel the skin and cut it into round shapes. Cook radish also along with tur dal keeping it in a small vessel along with dal as shown in the picture above. This is the traditional sambar of India. No need to buy a sambar powder.

Steps to make Arachi vitta Meen kolambu:
  1. Soak tamarind and salt together in 1/2 cup water for 10 min.
  2. When the tamarind gets mushy, combine them in water with your hand and extract the thick liquid in a vessel.
  3. You can add another 1/2 cup water and repeat the process to get tamarind extract. Keep aside to use at the later stage
  4. In a kadai, add ingredients to temper first.
  5. When the mustard pops, add sliced onion saute till it turns golden.
  6. Add the grinded ingredients to the kadai with chilli powder and dhania powder and saute well till the raw smell leaves.
  7. Add tamarind extract mix well. Close the kadai with lid and allow it to boil for 7 min.
  8. Check for salt and add if you want more.
  9. Add coconut milk mix well and add cleaned fish pieces. Allow it to get cooked for 5 min closing the lid
  10. Turn the fish onto the other side. Close the lid and cook for another 5 min.
  11. By now the oil will leave to the sides of the kadai.
  12. Serve hot with white rice and fish fry.

This is the traditional sambar of India. No need to buy a sambar powder. So the taste won't vary by the brand of powder we purchase. Arachi Vitta(Iyer) Sambhar (Lentil curry) Usually this sambhar is cooked by Brahmin's of Tamilnadu, so we call it as 'Iyer Sambhar'. I got this recipe from one of my Brahmin friend in Hyderabad, India.
