Erissery (Erishery) is another traditional Kerala Recipe made using ground coconut paste and finally seasoning with roasted coconut. I have always loved Erissery which my Mom used to prepare once in a while. Mathanga Payaru (Pumpkin and Bean) Erissery used to be the most common one prepared by my mom. Erissery is a special dish from Kerala that is also included in the feast of one of the biggest festivals of South India - Onam.

The ingredients needed to make Erissery:
  1. Prepare 250 gms yellow pumpkin peeled and chopped
  2. Take 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  3. Make ready 1/2 tsp red chilli powder

  6. Make ready 1/2-3/4 cup grated coconut
  7. Prepare 1/2 tsp cumin/ jeera
  8. Prepare 1-11/2 green chillies

  10. Take 2 tbsp coconut oil
  11. Get 3/4 tsp mustard seeds
  12. Get 1-2 dry red chillies
  13. Get 1/4 tsp Hing

Erissery is a kerala special dish made for Onam, and made mostly with yellow pumpkin,called as Mathanga erissery. I remember my mom makes this but i have never made tried this on my own or tasted it after marriage. As my athai is very fond of this erissery, she makes this more when she comes to our house for summer vacation. Erissery is one of the traditional recipe of Kerala.

Steps to make Erissery:
  1. Peel the pumpkin and chop into cubes.
  2. In a kadhai add pumpkin cubes and 3/4 cup water. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, curry leaves and salt.
  3. Now cook the pumpkin for 10 to 12 minutes on low flame till it gets cooked. Check-in between if water dries up,then add some more water and cook.
  4. While the pumpkin is cooking, add grated coconut, green chilli and cumin in a mixer jar. Add water and grind it to a smooth paste.
  5. Add this coconut paste to the pumpkin. Add some water if consistency looks thick. Stir well and cook on low flame for another 5 to 8 minutes.After it is done cover and keep aside.
  6. In a small pan heat coconut oil. Add mustard seeds after it crackles add red chillies. Then add little hing.
  7. Pour the tempering into erissery. Delicious Erissery is ready to serve with hot rice and appalam.
