With the abundance of seafood in Goa, it is mostly fish curries simmering on the fire or sorak (plain coconut curry) with fish shallow fried in oil. Growing up in Mumbai, my mother seldom cooked dal.   1. Pressure cook the dal with tomato, chilli and water for 3 whistle.
  2. When the dal is coking make a paste of the coconut, cumin, garlic, turmeric, onion with some water.
  3. When the pressure release from the cooker, open the lid of the cooker.
  4. Add the coconut paste, kokam, salt, and water.
  5. Heat coconut oil in a pan add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and let them crackle, add garlic, dry red chilli, curry leaves, fry till the garlic becomes a light brown, lastly add asafoitida.
  6. Now pour the hot tempering on the dal.
  7. Serve hot dal with rice.
