I have always loved Erissery which my Mom used to prepare once in a while. Mathanga Payaru (Pumpkin and Bean) Erissery used to be the most common one prepared by my mom. Erissery is a special dish from Kerala that is also included in the feast of one of the biggest festivals of South India - Onam.

The ingredients needed to make Erissery:
  1. Prepare 100 gm whole green moong
  2. Get 1 cup yellow (ripe) pumpkin
  3. Take 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  4. Get 14 tsp turmeric powder
  5. Prepare 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  6. Take 1 cup grated coconut
  7. Take 2 tbsp coconut oil
  8. Make ready 1/4 tsp mustard seeds/rye
  9. Take 1/2 tsp urad dal
  10. Get 2 dry red chillies
  11. Make ready 1 sprig curry leaves
  12. Get to taste Salt

Erissery is a kerala special dish made for Onam, and made mostly with yellow pumpkin,called as Mathanga erissery. I remember my mom makes this but i have never made tried this on my own or tasted it after marriage. As my athai is very fond of this erissery, she makes this more when she comes to our house for summer vacation. Erissery is one of the traditional recipe of Kerala.

Instructions to make Erissery:
  1. Soak the lentil (moong) for at least 4 -5hrs…Wash and pressure cook the whole moong along with chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and some water enough to cover the lentil….around 4 -5 whistles.
  2. Once the cooker is cooked add the diced pumpkin pieces to it and cook again for 2 whistles..let the pressure release and keep aside.
  3. Meanwhile take 1/2cup grated coconut and cumin seeds in a grinder and blend to a paste.
  4. Then add this paste to the erissery and cook for another 5 mins mashing the pumpkin with the spoon..
  5. Tadka: in a pan heat coconut oil and add the mustard seeds, red chillies, urad dal and curry leaves and saute then add the left grated coconut and fry till golden… add erissery to this pan and mix everything till the erissery is neither too thick nor too thin. serve with rice.
